I was battalion commander of 2/17 FA in 1963-64 which was followed by a third assignment in Washington. Harry Amos was my successor. When the battalion was alerted for Vietnam I called Harry and in double talk gave him a heads up on what was in the mill. He refused my offer to swap jobs.

Have you been in touch with Major General Vince Falter (Ret)? He was one of my battery commanders at Fort Sill. We stay in touch. Avery Hall was a gun section chief.

I have a file of the battalion newspaper, The Persuader, covering the period of my assignment to the battalion. I you would like a copy, please let me know. The file is probably a couple of hundred pages.

I joined the Army in 78 and spent 9 years in the same unit stationed in Nurnberg Germany ...first with the 3/17th FA at Merrell Barracks until it changed to the 3/5th FA . We had M110A2 or 8 inch SP guns. I was a mechanic first a 63C and then to 63D and even spent a lot of time doing loading and firing guns when crews were short.

Sure do miss those guns....

I am trying to help my father find some old comrades. He was in Nam from June 1965 to July 1966 he was in 2/17 field artillery He is from Tennessee and and was a E-5 at that time he also has been in field artillery all my life. If you know him or where I might find someone who knows him please e-mail me. He has e-mail too but is not yet using it alot so I offered to help him all I can. We then we stationed at Ft sill but am not sure of the battery and he was a instructor Not sure where we were but at one point they called his battery "Glover's Gorillas"
