This is an invitation to post on my new Discussion Page on my C Battery 2/17th website. I have added a discussion page which allows you to post a message or suggest a topic and receive replies. I will try to keep it open without screening or editing but will delete material I deem objectionable. Got a question, an opinion or just want to start a discussion; post on the Discussion Page. I started a "Care Package" topic, try a reunion, military award, VA benefit, Agent Orange, Korea Past and Present, New Army, etc. topic. Site: www.persuaders65.org

This is a time to reminisce with old friends as well as meet other veterans of the 17th Artillery. Let’s get together. We would love to see you, your spouse and family there. Hello 17th Field Artillery Vets: I am sending this in memory of Maj. Harold E. Lauer, recently deceased. We buried Maj. Lauer at Arlington national cemetry June 9, 04. He served this unit as a battery, then company commander during WW11. He served through the entire war in all the action from Africa to Germany. Sadly missed by family. Nephew Richard Carey

Hello. Just found this site today. I served with the 1st battalion 17th field artillery from 1975 to 1978. I was in Service Battery ammo platoon. I saw the pictures of Charlie Battery In Augsburg in 1976. Was there myself. Had quite a few friends in C Battery. This web site sure brought back some fond memories. May God bless you all my friends.

I was in "B" Battery 7/17th FA from December 1968 to February 1970. We were stationed in Korea (I think at Camp Pelham/Son yu-ri?) Would be interested in hearing from anyone with B/7/17 at that time.

The 1st Cav reunion will be held this year in Milwaukee, WI. I live about 90 miles from Milwaukee and will try to get to the reunion at least for one day. Are any 17th vets planning to attend the reunion. It is held from June 9-13th. I am thinking about attending the artillery luncheon on Sat. I could be there on any of the days if anyone is interested. We supported the Cav in Korea and from 65-68 in Vietnam. I recently joined the Sheridan Cavaly Chapter in the Chicago area and they will have a hospitality room at the reunion. Contact me if you have any interest in attending or for information. I was in Btry B, 2d, 17th FA. FireBase Colgan, Dalat RVN, from Jan."70" to Nov. 28th "70". I just discovered this website today, and have been looking it over for the last 3 hrs. My MOS was 94b20 (Cook). I only found 1 person that I served with, and that was Doug Runice. If anyone remembers me It will be by the name of William W. Van Horn, not Tucker. Ask me and I will tell you why the name change. Not really a big deal. This is a great site,THANKS ALOT FOR PROVIDING IT FOR THOSE OF US THAT HAVE NO OTHER WAY OF CONTACTING FRIENDS FROM THE PAST THAT WE HAVE LOST TOUCH WITH. THANKS AGAIN.

I want to thank Jack Picciolo for being so thoughtful of me and taking the time and putting all the effort into finding me. I went to Viet Nam in 1965 with C btry 2/17 and spent most of my time there in the FO Section with Tom Kurtz till I ETS in 1966. I was so elated to hear from Jack, that when I got of the phone, I had tears in my eyes. I was always trying to find out if the there were any reunions for any of the units that I served with. Prior to going to Nam there were two people that I got very attached to. Tom Kurtz, and 2Lt Gerald L. Johnson. Lt Johnson went to flight school, and Tom well he became my father, as he looked after me guiding me and making a man out of this kid. I was 19 years old when we landed in Nam just a very young and immature young kid andI thought that I knew it all. For many years after the Viet Nam wall was erected I could not get very close to it, as I thought for sure that someones name would be there that I knew. I would always get there but never up to view it close. I am looking forward to seeing those of you that will be at the 2004 reunion in Washington DC. I can hardly wait and see all of my friends that I grew up with. Fraternally Yours Robert L. Plata

aloha my wife and I have moved from Hawaii to Washington state . So once again I have come back to read the postings for the last two months . In doing so I decided to become a member and sent by money in today . Would like to hear from anyone who served with 7/17 artillery Korea 67/68 or around that time . during my time there was a friendly fire incident. one of our own was killed on the south bank of the imjin river . He was shot while on night stakeout by another member of our own . I have been researching this event and have come up with quite a bit of information . I know who the shooter was but was unable to identify the casualty . so I'm trying to give him the respect and honor he deserves for his service to his nation If anybody has any information on this please contact me . Also does anybody know if we have a unit historian or if there is someplace I can go for information regarding those years . Aloha Thomas

Just makeing another visit and realized I made a mistake when I signed in befor, When I was in SVC Btry 3/17FA at Merrell Bks in Nurnberg Ger we had 8" M110's not M109's. At the time when I was assigned to the 17th I was in HHB 3/39th at Merrell Bks, that was a 280MM unit, When we merged with the 17th, the 17th moved to Merrell and we retired one of our 280MM Guns and sent it to Ft. Sill, It was named Atomic Annie when we had it, as it remaines today, as I understand it that was the very Gun that fired the first Arty Atomic Round
